A Roadmap to Green Prosperity

In 2009, the Portland metropolitan region became a pilot of the national Climate Prosperity Project — an invitation-only initiative to reduce emissions while stimulating economic prosperity.  PoSI worked with public and private sector leaders to answer the question: how does the Portland region successfully curb emissions, expand business opportunity and increase savings across jurisdictional boundaries?

We produced the Climate Prosperity Greenprint — our region’s roadmap to accelerate our leadership in green development and clean technology. We believe the Portland metropolitan region can simultaneously strengthen its economy, reduce carbon emissions and maintain a focused leadership position in the global green economy.

Portland is one of four regions that are piloting the Climate Prosperity framework.  Silicon Valley, Denver and St. Louis have also produced strategies to transform their economies towards a new prosperity.  All four regions are working hand-in-hand with the national nonprofit Climate Prosperity Project, Inc.

Launched in early 2011, Portland’s Greenprint is working its way into the adopted economic development strategies and organizations of our region. Created with the input of over 150 organizations, it is a call to action that identifies seven key actions and supporting strategies to achieve them:

  1. Expand Green Project Finance
  2. Accelerate Energy Efficiency and Clean Energy
  3. Commercialize Green Technologies
  4. Cultivate the Clean Tech Cluster
  5. Cultivate a Sustainable Forestry and Agriculture Cluster
  6. Develop a Pipeline of Green Talent
  7. Build Support and Communicate Results
